Pakistan pulled it off with ease in the end having eight wickets and an over to spare. Sri Lanka had been unbeaten in the tournament, having an in-form batting line up and a bowling attack capable of defending a moderate total. But the real story has not been so much the whole tournament as the last few days.

Pakistan started their campaign in disarray, bereft of match practice and in constant company of the confidence dampener of not getting to host enough cricket at home. It has been a sad last year for Pakistan cricket, made worse by the terrible attack in Lahore on the Sri Lankan team bus that was headed towards the Gadaffi Stadium.

Sri Lanka has not had it any easy with the Army pitched against the LTTE, countless deaths and millions of refugees to contend with. The consistent way Sri Lanka has performed throughout the tournament speaks volumes about their character. It was just that Pakistan’s need and desire to win was much more today. …
